The founding documents of the United States promise a “more perfect union,” so perhaps it’s no wonder Americans are still striving for a utopian society. By 1857, La Reunion was officially dissolved. Unfortunately, none of the participants came with extensive knowledge of farming techniques, and the region’s poor soil quality and inclimate weather left the colony unable to sustain itself. Members’ shares in the community profits were based on their investment in the project and the labor they performed. In 1855, a group of settlers made the trip from France to La Reunion to join Considerant’s communal society. He settled on piece of land near present day Dallas, and began to build a commune he called La Reunion (“the meeting” in French). In the early 1850s, another noted French socialist named Victor Prosper Considerant, a follower of Fourierism, set out across the United States in search of the perfect location for his utopian society. Remember Charles Fourier, the original inspiration behind Utopia, Ohio? Well the founders of Utopia weren’t the only ones who thought the Fourier vision seemed like a winning idea for a society. Today, you can see the remnants of many failed attempts at creating utopia in your own state. ![]() Ok, so maybe none of those alternative societies achieved lasting success as a true utopia, but does that mean it can’t be achieved? It would seem that for as long as there has been civilization, there have been people seeking to perfect it - striving for harmony, equity, and prosperity, but never quite finding the right recipe. By the mid-1850s, many of the community members, frustrated with their inability to expand, had packed up and moved away. However, it was the community’s exclusivity and the unwillingness of its neighbors to allow it to grow, that ultimately caused Warren’s Utopia to fail. That invitation-only system was meant to protect the rights of individuals to choose who they associated with. The only way to join the community was to be invited by someone who lived there. His version of Utopia was a labor based economy, where property was owned by individuals, and goods were paid for in hours of work. ![]() Warren believed in individual rights and no hierarchy, which earned him a reputation as an early anarchist. Credit for name “Utopia” belongs to Josiah Warren, who purchased the land after the demise of the Spiritualist community. ![]()
